Fines up to £5000 If you don't register for the correct waste carrier licence.

You must register if your business does any of the following:

• transports waste (a carrier)
• buys, sells or disposes of waste (a dealer)
• arranges for someone else to buy, sell or dispose of waste (a broker)

|There is a different process for registering as a waste carrier in Northern Ireland, and Scotland 

Before you start

You must know,

Upper Tier Waste Carrier Licence you must apply for this licence if you are transporting other peoples waste or carry your own building construction and demolition waste. This licence will allow you to transport all types of waste. The cost of this waste carrier licence is £274 (+VAT) for 3 years.

A Lower Tier Waste Carrier Licence. Only apply for this if you transport waste you produced as a business unless its construction, building and demolition waste. An example of things you can not carry with a lower tier waste carrier licence is listed below. The cost of this licence is £49.99 (+VAT) and is indefinite.

The following waste types are examples of waste you can NOT transport with a lower-tier waste carrier licence.

Boilers,

Bathroom suites

Concrete,

Doors

Decking,

Fencing,

Garden sheds,

Roofing materials

Rubble,

Radiators,

Soil,

Tiles,

Windows,

After you register 

You will receive an email confirming the payment you have made and then within a few minutes you will receive a second email with your waste carrier licence attached. This can take longer if your application has been picked out for random checks. Please note if your application is submitted on a Friday after 5pm then you are likely to receive this on Monday morning at the latest. 

Your business details will then appear on the public register within 48hrs. This will allow your customers to see that you have a valid licence giving them confidence in the service you provide.
